Essential Question:
What qualities should a president should possess?
Lesson Development:
- Begin with a turn and talk to review from the previous day
- What qualities did we come up with yesterday that we think a president should possess?
- Why are they important?
- Do you have any ideas?
- Tell students that this week we will be working in groups to create our ideal presidential candidates
- We will create campaign ads to explain to others why that person is the best candidate for president
- And then we will vote
- Assign groups of 4-5 kids (teacher discretion)
- Explain that before we can decide on a candidate, we must think about what qualities we want our candidate to have. We will decide on these within our groups.
- First, group members share each of their top 5 qualities so that all opinions are heard - use talking stick
- Now that we know what is important to each member of groups, deliberate and decide as a group what their top 3 qualities are for presidential candidate.
- After choosing the top 3 qualities that a candidate should posses, the group of students will come up with a name for their candidate.
